The warped Insidious franchise also has a warped timeline, and the new trailer for its next outing, Insidious: The Last Key, is a horror throwback with some new tricks.
Starring the unstoppable horror icon Lin Shaye, The Last Key plunges further into The Further when Shaye's Dr. Elise Rainier goes home to do a little soul-searching. That hellish other dimension hides more of Rainier’s backstory as this entry’s plot focuses on hauntings surrounding her family’s home. The new trailer, which you can watch below, adds another element to the paranormal investigation: a haunting whistle.
Horror films are always more effective when leaning on sound design, especially non-verbal sound training for its audiences. Think about the conditioning of Jaws’ soundtrack or the handclaps of The Conjuring. With this whistle being the new indication of ghostly bad news, The Last Key looks like it’ll be having a lot of fun toying with its fans.
The Taking of Deborah Logan director Adam Robitel looks to create another terrifying film grounded in the abilities of veteran actors, as the comic relief duo of Specks and Tucker (Angus Sampson and Leigh Whannell) will join Shaye in bringing home the scares when the film hits theaters on Jan. 5.
