For fans who’ve been watching Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., this weekend’s Captain America: Winter Soldier provided some pretty huge crossovers between the small and silver screens. So, what’s next?

Spoilers ahead for Captain America: Winter Soldier and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.!

We’ve all been wondering exactly what Marvel will do with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to tie into the movie-verse, and in the wake of Winter Soldier’s revelations, we’re anxious to learn how a show called Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will work now that S.H.I.E.L.D. is essentially falling apart and rotting from the inside out due to modern-day HYDRA.

Though the show has stumbled somewhat along the way, this represents a pretty massive chance to let S.H.I.E.L.D. finally reach its potential. The series has lacked that “ragtag” mentality that has made all of Joss Whedon’s other shows so successful, but by imploding the mothership, they’ve finally left Coulson’s gang on the brink.

Executive producer Maurissa Tancharoen noted as much in an interview with USA Today, along with confirmation that the events of Winter Soldier will lead to a major “retooling” of the series. Considering how the film ended, how could it not?

“Survival is a huge part of it. There is no more tapping into big S.H.I.E.L.D. through the holo-comm. The guns you have on the plane are the guns you have. They're basically left with the bare minimum… Hopefully people who've had mixed feelings about the show will now understand it was all part of a big plan.”

Honestly, for a series that has struggled to find any meaningful stakes, the past few weeks have finally hit the mark. If they can manage to match the scope (in stakes, not budget, obviously), then this “retooling” could be just the jolt the series has needed.

A new clip from this Tuesday night’s new episode on ABC has been released, showing the immediate impact of the HYDRA reveal as Agent Garrett’s plane comes under attack from a very unexpected source.
