With Christopher Nolan’s ambitious sci-fi epic Interstellar opening wide this week, it’s the perfect time to be reminded of some of cinema’s greatest space moments.

In the wake of the tragic Virgin Galactic crash, and with NASA facing draconian budget cuts, there's something to be said for getting a look at some of the most awe-inspiring moments in space exploration cinema to remember why we aspire to reach the stars. From 2001: A Space Odyssey to Apollo 13 and Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan (not to mention Nolan’s aforementioned magnum opus).

Seriously, this supercut is just about guaranteed to give you a cold chill or two. We might be a long way from actually sending humans to Mars (and beyond), but movies still hold the magic to take us to all those wonderful heights. Kick back and enjoy.
