Iron Fist canceled by Marvel and Netflix

Iron Fist has been officially canceled by Marvel Television and Netflix after two seasons, becoming the first of the six series launched by the two companies to get the ax.

A joint statement issued by both said:

“Marvel’s Iron Fist will not return for a third season on Netflix. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is proud of the series and grateful for all of the hard work from our incredible cast, crew and showrunners. We’re thankful to the fans who have watched these two seasons, and for the partnership we’ve shared on this series. While the series on Netflix has ended, the immortal Iron Fist will live on.”

Ironically, the show — which was blasted by both fans and critics in its first season — was much better received in its second round, which premiered just over a month ago. But apparently that wasn't enough to get the show the go-ahead for a third season.

That last sentence, however — "the immortal Iron Fist will live on" — could hint at the show, or at least some of the characters, finding a new home on the Disney Play streaming service, which will debut sometime next year and is reportedly developing shows starring characters like Scarlet Witch and Loki.

As for the rest of the Marvel/Netflix universe, Season 3 of Daredevil will be available starting next Friday (Oct. 19), while Jessica Jones is currently filming its third season, and a second season of The Punisher is in the can and awaiting a premiere date. Luke Cage is also expected to come back for a third go as well.

Finally, while The Defenderswhich featured Iron Fist/Danny Rand (Finn Jones) heavily in its one season so far — has not been officially terminated, signs suggest that the superhero team-up will not come back for future installments, or at least not with the same makeup of heroes.

Are you disappointed that Iron Fist has been canceled? Do you think the show was headed in the right direction, or this a mercy killing for the mystic martial arts master?
