Is Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson teasing news on the film's sequel?

It's been nearly two years since Doctor Strange arrived in theaters, and while we're certainly seen plenty of the character since then in Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War, we've yet to hear much concrete news about when another Strange solo film could finally emerge. Now, it seems we could be on the verge of learning something courtesy of Strange director and co-writer Scott Derrickson.

Derrickson, who left Twitter in the wake of the firing of his fellow Marvel Studios director James Gunn, posted a Doctor Strange comic book panel to his Instagram page Tuesday. This is nothing new for Derrickson, but this time he added a brief message in the comments. Check it out:

That particular quote, by the way, may be something Stephen Strange has said, but it originates in Jesus' prayer on the Mount of Olives in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 22, verse 42. There aren't necessarily a lot of Christ parallels in the life of Stephen Strange, but he did recently sacrifice himself in an effort to ensure a particular outcome for the universe, so...

What does this mean? Again, posting panels from Doctor Strange comics is nothing new for Derrickson. In fact, this isn't even the first time he's posted this particular panel, but the message is new. Is Derrickson teasing a particular Strange storyline? Is he praying himself on behalf of the character? And what happens in September? For all we know right now Derrickson was simply declaring that he was taking a social media break throughout August and will return next month. Or, more enticingly, an announcement of a title, or pre-production, or a release date for Doctor Strange 2 could finally come.

Back in June Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige finally confirmed what fans had long expected but that no one had been able to promise: That a Strange sequel will indeed happen somewhere down the line. Star Benedict Cumberbatch had spent the Avengers: Infinity War press tour earlier this year dodging around questions about a sequel, noting there were no guarantees, but Feige has assured fans that there are plans for the Doctor beyond his Avengers presence. That doesn't mean a sequel is coming in the immediate aftermath of Avengers 4, but even learning Derrickson is getting back to work would be encouraging.

Doctor Strange will next be seen, we hope, in Avengers 4, which is scheduled for release on May 3, 2019.
