IT floats to the highest grossing horror spot, dethroning The Exorcist

The juggernaut that is the IT movie keeps on breaking records and, according to Warner Bros. the New Line production will be the highest-grossing U.S. horror movie ever when it blows past The Exorcist's $232.9 million sometime this Thursday (granted, that's without adjusting for inflation, as commenter Daniel Clark notes below). While IT is currently behind The Exorcist's worldwide gross of $441.3 million, Thursday will clock it around $386 million and the film doesn't show any sign of slowing down in the next month or so.

Granted, Warner Bros. is calling this record based on the strict horror genre category, which leaves out films like The Sixth Sense and Jaws, but even if you add in those numbers, it's likely Pennywise will eventually be taking a bite out of them if things keep going the way they have been.

Now all someone needs to do is make a psychic killer clown shark movie and break all the box office records.

I shouldn't joke about that. I'm sure someone in Hollywood is already considering it.
