There's something cathartic about breaking the rules with no consequences that appeals to our baser, animalistic instincts and urges. Becoming the villain allows that usually supressed lizard hindbrain to take over and wreak as much havoc as possible. It's the central sales pitch for the upcoming LEGO DC Super-Villains video game, which drops this fall and allows players to join the wayward and wicked characters of a rich comic book universe.
The announcement trailer dropped today and features Joker, Harley Quinn, Posion Ivy, and Reverse Flash playing pranks and stealing stuff to the tune of Blondie's "One Way or Another." Finally, Joker speaks directly to an incarcerated individual meant to represent the audience. The person breaks out their cell and begins wildly switching between different costumes and accessories, showing us the countless possibilities for customization within the game.

At the end of the trailer, the game's final splash graphic also showcases the inclusion of Darkseid, Gorilla Grodd, Deathstroke, and Lex Luthor, which means they're really pulling out all the stops. LEGO DC Super-Villains is also analogous to LEGO's DC Super Heroes series of games and movies, making us wonder how they didn't think of this sooner!
It brings to mind the promise of Suicide Squad that was eventually a disappointment, but this game looks like it'll deliver on said covenant of allowing one to let their inner bad guy roam free. At the same time, it's still LEGO, so there won't be any blood or violence, but this is one of those rare games outside of the Mortal Kombat-esque experiences (a la Injustice: Gods Among Us) that allows you to take on the persona of a famous comic book villain.
The game is set for release on October 16 for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
