The latest addition to the ever-growing TV stable of superheroes has just been revealed.

According to The Wrap, CBS has cast Melissa Benoist in the lead role of its upcoming Supergirl series. Benoist is best known as Marley on Glee, and was recently seen on the big screen as Miles Teller's girlfriend in the outstanding Oscar-nominated drama Whiplash

Melissa Benoist

Benoist, who beat out other reported candidates for the role such as Claire Holt from The Originals and Gemma Atkinson from Casualty, tweeted her excitement over the news earlier today:

She has apparently already dyed her hair blonde for the part as well:

Benoist will play Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Kal-El (aka Superman), who was born on Krypton but vacated the planet just before it was destroyed. As the series begins, she has spent her entire time on Earth trying to hide her powers, but events lead her to finally start using them.

Other characters who will appear on the show include Kara's foster sister, Alex Danvers, who could potentially become a villain/foil for her adopted sibling, and Jimmy Olsen, the young Daily Planet photographer who has had some passing experience with Kara's cousin (cough).

Benoist joined Glee in its fourth season and has also been seen on The Good Wife and Homeland. She'll also be seen in the upcoming films Danny Collins and The Longest Ride.

Supergirl will be executive-produced by Arrow and Flash mastermind Greg Berlanti, along with Ali Adler and Sarah Schechter. There will be no waiting around while a pilot is approved for this one: CBS has already committed to the series, with Supergirl expected to premiere during the 2015-2016 season.
