It's official!: J.J. Abrams WON'T be directing a 3rd Star Trek Movie

Remember when Simon Pegg promised that J.J. would be back for more Trek? Oops.

So, hey, do you recall how J.J. Abrams got courted by Lucasfilm into making the new Star Wars movies? You also might recollect how there was a rumor about how deeply involved Abrams was going to have to be in the Star Wars universe, because, duh.

During all of that, people on the outside looking in kept saying, "There is absolutely no way Abrams can do Star Trek and Star Wars at the same time." In fact, if you had a device that could read minds, you would probably discover that every geek in the known universe was at least passively thinking about that at all times.

Well? Abrams is stepping down as director. Here's what he had to say about it:

Whomever it is that directs the film will be someone we all know is going to keep the cast and crew in good hands. I feel very lucky to have been part of it, and it definitely feels like the right time to let someone come in and do their own thing. I certainly don’t want someone to come in and try to do what I would have done. We want to hire someone who’s gonna come in and bring their own sensibility. I’m very excited to see what comes next, despite feeling jealous of whomever that person is.

So, if we were to use that same imaginary mind-reading device, it would probably say you're thinking "I #$%ing knew it". Really, is this a bad thing? However you may have felt about Star Trek Into Darkness (hint: hardcore Trekkies HATED IT), the reality is that both franchises would have suffered if Abrams tried to be so directly involved in both.

Now we just need to figure out who should direct instead! Any takers?
