It's been almost a year since Matt Fraction announced that he'd be wrapping up Hawkeye, the Eisner-winning series with art by David Aja, Annie Wu and others that spawned a rabid fanbase and one of the best pets in comics, but we still haven't seen the final issue. In fact, since the penultimate issue was released in February, we haven't even heard that much about when the last issue would drop, and when we did it was usually just news of a delay. The issue's apparently been done for some time, and now Marvel's finally given it both a release date and a preview. So, get ready to say goodbye to Hawkguy.
When we last left Clint Barton, he was in a very tight spot, and he seemed to be losing his battle with the "Tracksuit Draculas" trying to take over his New York neighborhood. He'd been partially deafened (again), his brother Barney had been crippled, and it seemed he was going to need all the help he could get for a final showdown with the Tracksuits. Now, from the looks of this preview, he's getting it, and the final battle is on.
We've been waiting for this issue for so long that another Hawkeye series, All-New Hawkeye by Jeff Lemire and Ramon Perez, has already stepped in to take Fraction, Aja and company's place in Marvel's publishing line, but there'll always be a special place in our hearts for "Hawkguy." This comic was special, often in a very moving way, and it seemed to inspire Marvel to let other creators explore some very distinct takes on solo heroes like She-Hulk and Moon Knight. Now, next month, we finally get to say thanks and goodbye.
Check out the action-packed preview below, and look for Hawkeye #22 in comic shops on July 15.
