With Johnny Depp returning next summer to the role of Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, it's come out that the superstar actor was NOT the first choice to play the part.
According to Fox News, screenwriter Stuart Beattie had another leading man in mind when he conceived the story for the first film, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.
"I initially wrote that character with Hugh Jackman in mind," Beattie said. "Hence the name Captain JACK Sparrow."
Jackman was already a star in Australia, where Beattie also hails from, but was not as well known in the States when the first Pirates film was being developed. So execs at Disney passed over Jackman for the role and pursued Depp instead. Jackman went on to success as Wolverine in the X-Men series, along with many other roles.
Depp recently revealed that Disney execs were extremely nervous about his interpretation of the role, but their fears were put to rest by the movie's blockbuster box office.
On Stranger Tides, the fourth in the Pirates franchise, comes out May 20, 2011.
Do you think Hugh Jackman might have been a good Jack Sparrow? Or is it impossible to see anyone but Johnny Depp in the role now?
