Jake Gyllenhaal runs into some killer art in first trailer for Netflix horror film, Velvet Buzzsaw

Who says the world of fine art has to be boring? In the first trailer for Netflix's Velvet Buzzsaw, snooty art critic, Morf Vandewalt (played Jake Gyllenhaal), becomes terrorized by some supernatural paintings created by an artist that went nuts.

Billed as "a satirical thriller set in the contemporary art world scene of Los Angeles," the film marks the first collaboration between Gyllenhaal and writer/director Dan Gilroy since 2014's Nightcrawler, itself a takedown of media sensationalism.

Watch the Bandersnatch-y trailer now:

The movie also stars Rene Russo (Gilroy's real-world wife, who also starred in Nightcrawler), John Malkovich (Bird Box), Toni Collette (Hereditary), Natalia Dyer (Stranger Things), Tom Sturridge (Journey's End), Zawe Ashton (Doctor Who), Daveed Diggs (Ferdinand), and Billy Magnussen (Aladdin).

Fans of Stephen King may note a passing resemblance to the author's 1999 short story, The Road Virus Heads North, in which a man purchases a painting from a yard sale, refusing to be scared off by the story of its creator going crazy, burning their other portraits, and committing suicide. In the end, the main character realizes that the piece is haunted by some otherworldy force that dooms him to a grisly death. No word yet on if Velvet Buzzsaw will follow a similiar path.

Velvet Buzzsaw will be painted onto Netflix for your viewing pleasure Friday, February 1.
