Marvel movie director James Gunn took to Facebook yesterday to reveal that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’s home release will get the super-duper high-def treatment.

The Guardians of the Galaxy sequel, featuring the crew of the Milano, will be released by Disney on 4K Ultra HD as well as 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD when it arrives in stores toward the end of August (a recent street date puts the release at Aug. 22, as you can see in the pic below, but we'll have to wait for the official announcement before getting the complete list of awesome goodies and extras).

Not only that, but the upcoming home release will be the House of Mouse’s very first foray into the 4K UltraHD format, and I’m pretty confident the superhero movie will look absolutely stunning on a 4K television screen. Make no mistake, I luuurve my 3D TV, but this Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 4K home release is definitely tempting. A lot. Le sigh.

Here’s what Gunn said:

"Yes, it's true, & I am UNBELIEVABLY EXCITED to announce that, after a couple of years of me begging and pleading, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be coming to home video in 4K UltraHD. It will be the FIRST Disney release to be released this way.”

Are you excited about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 being released in 4K UltraHD? Which format will you be getting your hands on?
