Guardians of the Galaxy helmer James Gunn was on hand to attend the recent world premiere of Thor: Ragnarok, and he's now taken to Facebook to share his thoughts. Surprise, surprise: It's a glowing take, as he weighed in on the cosmic shenanigans of the God of Thunder’s third not-so-solo entry.

Amid a hail of praise, in which he called Thor: Ragnarok the "funniest" film in the MCU, Gunn compared Taika Waititi’s colorful Marvel movie to 1980s sci-fi classics Flash Gordon (strangely enough, Guardians of the Galaxy derailed Matthew Vaughn's plans for a reboot of that) and The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension.

“I don't think any film of the modern era has captured the bats*** crazy fun of 80's classics like Flash Gordon and Buckaroo Banzai as well as Taika Waititi has here,” Gunn wrote. “I felt like I was fourteen watching a magical VHS tape that exploded into something grand. It's the most colorful of all Marvel films -- I mean, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is practically sepia-tone in comparison -- and it's also the funniest.”

Gunn also singled out leading man Chris Hemsworth as the God of Thunder, Tessa Thompson as the warrior Valkyrie, and Waititi himself (who plays the motion-capture character Korg), noting that he thinks the New Zealand native "was very lucky that Kronans have the same exact accent as New Zealanders.” As for Mark Ruffalo's Hulk, sounds like Gunn is convinced Marvel has finally zeroed in on the character's best incarnation.

The director also made sure to address any inherent skepticism in seeing a Marvel-movie director praise another film in the company's stable. In asking for readers' comments, he requested that fans "leave out the ones where you accuse me of loving the movie because I have to love the movie because I work for Marvel. Because the simple truth is, I don't have to do anything, and I haven't loved all of the movies since I've been at Marvel. So there."

Thor: Raganarok opens on Nov. 3.
