One of the reasons why Avengers: Infinity War’s domestic release was moved up a week may have been to avoid running into Deadpool 2 any sooner than it had to. Disney and 20th Century Fox may be in the process of merging, but they aren’t the same company yet. That’s why there are two Marvel movies currently occupying the top slots at the box office, with Deadpool 2 emerging as the new champion. But just because the parent companies are competing doesn’t mean that there isn’t a camaraderie among the creators behind-the-scenes. Case in point, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn was quick to post a congratulatory message for everyone involved with Deadpool 2.
On twitter, Gunn acknowledged Deadpool 2 stars Ryan Reynolds and Morena Baccarin; director David Leitch; screenwriter Rhett Reese and the rest of the team behind the movie by posting an image of Baby Groot mashed up with Deadpool.
Judging from the picture, it looks like Groot gave himself a Deadpool style makeover with paint and a brush. We can only wonder how Drax and the rest of the Guardians would react to this.
As noted by Gunn, the current estimates have Deadpool 2 coming in at about $130 million for the opening weekend. That would be slightly below the original Deadpool’s $132 million opening in February 2016. However, there is a strong possibility that Deadpool 2’s numbers may be even larger by the end of the weekend.
Combined with the Thursday night preview screenings, Deadpool 2 took in $53 million on its first day. That allowed the film to claim the biggest single day opening record for an R-rated film from It. By Monday, it may not be the last record to fall.
