Ever since Marvel went ahead and announced its release slate for the next half-decade, everyone kind of assumed it’d be leading to a super-mega-huge crossover. Well, not so fast.

With the hit space adventure Guardians of the Galaxy hitting DVD and Blu-ray, director James Gunn has been rocking the interview circuit to hype the release. Plus, since he’s a cool guy, he agreed to answer a smattering of fan questions from Screen Junkies.

Most of the questions revolved around digging into some of his favorite scenes and favorite lines, or whether certain characters will return in the sequel (see: more Yondu!). But when he was asked about the odds of a crossover with the flagship heroes of The Avengers, Gunn’s answer piqued our interest.

Now that it’s confirmed we’ll be getting a two-part extravaganza based around the Infinity War in 2018 and 2019, it made sense those films would probably bring the Guardians to Earth to help fight the good fight. But Gunn made a point to remind fans his super-team exists in a very different world than the rest of the Marvel universe — and it might not come together exactly as fans expect:

“We really are separate from the Avengers, and I don't think people should assume too many things about the Guardians play in all these. We have our own galaxy to take care of. We have our own galaxy to save. Earth is the Avengers’ province. Thinking that everything is going to come together in a perfect way is not necessarily the way it's going to happen.”

Hmm. Considering Guardians was such a big hit, and the lead time to put these movies together, you’d have to think there’ll be some sort of crossover action taking place. But, at least from Gunn’s comments, it could be that maybe we'll see the story from two perspectives — with the Guardians playing a role in space and the Avengers battling it out on Earth? Or, maybe no crossover at all, since we do have a standalone Guardians sequel on the way?
