In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, director James Gunn already proved that he knows exactly how to utilize the always-entertaining David Hasselhoff’s unique set of skills (and chest hair). So it's not surprising at all that Gunn and The Hoff have spoken about jumping KITT’s engine in a contemporary big-screen way.
In a modern world that’s ripe for another talking Trans Am, it appears that The Hoff has been encouraged by the prospects of a long-gestating Knight Rider feature that he’s recently pitched to Gunn. According to THR, while speaking about the GOTG Vol. II home video release, Hasselhoff’s had this to say about the potential project that’s been rumored since at least 2002, and which he’s been attached to since 2015:
“I’ve given some ideas to James for Knight Rider and he responded in a big way. If it does go forward, I don’t want it to be spoofed like Baywatch or 21 Jump Street. Those films lose what it’s about and you have to respect the fans.”
As a child of the ‘80s who has a likely misguided nostalgia for this project, I do find it somewhat alluring, even with Baywatch’s foul stench still lingering. Mostly because I just want to see a modern-day KITT. Granted, they don’t make Pontiac Trans Ams anymore, particularly not ones with AI. And that Ford Shelby GT500 version in the 2008 TV reboot didn’t exactly blow audiences away in its only season of work.
Of course, Gunn is a very busy man, what with GOTG Vol. 3 in the works, and being Feige’s right-hand man overseeing the more galatial aspects of the MCU, so maybe Gunn was just humoring The Hoff. What do you think, would you be down for a modern-day Michael Knight, hopefully still driving a self-aware, souped-up 1982 Trans Am? Who should play KITT’s helmet-haired, crime-fighting driver?
