James Gunn reveals characters he wanted to use, but couldn't, in Guardians of the Galaxy

You’d think by playing around in the little-used cosmic corner of the Marvel Universe, James Gunn would’ve had a bit more freedom to introduce some random characters in Guardians of the Galaxy. But apparently the battle over film rights extend all the way out to Knowhere.

In a fascinating interview with The Movie Crypt podcast, the Guardians of the Galaxy director was asked about any characters he’d wanted to use — but couldn’t — due to rights issues. Turns out there were a few. Though Gunn wouldn’t go so far as to say these characters would’ve definitely been a part of the first Guardians movie, he does confirm the odds were good — meaning at the least he might’ve dropped some easter eggs to capitalize on in the sequel.

The characters? Part-time Guardians team member Bug, who Marvel apparently doesn’t have the film rights to use at this point. Gunn said there was a “good chance” he would’ve introduced Bug had he been allowed to do so. Oh, and get ready to geek out — cult fave character Rom: Spaceknight was also on his short list. But, alas, the film rights got in the way.

Check out the full quote below and geek out over what could’ve been:

“There's characters that I've been interested in that I'm not allowed to use but I won't go so far as to say I definitely would have had them. There was a really good chance Bug was going to show up in the first movie but we do not own him... but, anyway, that was going to happen, perhaps. Listen, I really love Rom: Spaceknight, as everyone at Marvel knows because they've given me Rom stuff... but we don't own Rom. I would love for Rom: Spaceknight to show up because I love his story, I love the way he looks, I love everything about him...

There are other characters, but basically, some characters we can work around and we can use. Listen, I wanted to use the Badoon, but the Badoon we don't own... they're really interesting. They would be like the cannon fodder guys who were like the Sakaaran in my movie... I wrote them as Badoon but I just did a search-replace-Sakaaran when I found out we didn't have Badoon. It was strangely late in the process when I found that out. They were designed as Badoon.”

What characters would you like to see in future Guardians films? Were you desperately missing any of these folks in the first movie?
