Filming on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is now in full swing, and director James Gunn took to his Facebook page to share a piece of storyboard sketch from a scene shot earlier today for the Marvel superhero movie.
As you’ll see below, the sketch unveils the Guardians’ new character Mantis, played by French Canadian actress Pom Klementieff (Oldboy) and she’s surrounded by ... actually, it’s pretty hard to make it out. At least, it seems to confirm that the character will sport her traditional antennae.
In the Marvel comics, Mantis is a half-Vietnamese, half-German woman left as a child with the Priests of Pama, a sect of the Kree. Believing her to be the Celestial Madonna, they taught her martial arts. She also possesses psychic abilities that include telepathy, empathy, plant manipulation, astral projection and an accelerated healing factor. The character was created by Steve Englehart and Don Heck and was first introduced in Avengers #112 back in 1973.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will see the return of PeterQuill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper), Drax (Dave Bautista), Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel), Yondu (Michael Rooker), Nebula (Karen Gillan), Kraglin (Sean Gunn) and Nova Prime (Glenn Close). New cast members include Klementieff as Mantis, Kurt Russell, who is rumored to play Star-Lord’s dad, and Sylvester Stallone.
The movie is slated to open in theaters on May 5, 2017.
