Janelle Monae recently made our fangirl dreams come true with her music video for "PYNK" starring Tessa Thompson (Annihilation, Thor: Ragnarok), and now Monae has announced she’ll release a short sci-fi film along with her upcoming third album.
When Monae’s album, titled Dirty Computer, comes out later this month, we’re not only getting the sure-to-be-mind-blowing jams but also a bonus in the form of a 44-minute “emotion picture” starring Tessa Thompson as Monae’s love interest.
According to io9, the film associated with Monae's upcoming album “will begin a new story about a woman on the run from an authoritarian government in a dystopian future, where people labeled 'deviants' have their memories forcibly removed.” The film is expected to drop on MTV and BET on April 26, Variety reports.
Sounds delightful, right? Monae — who recently starred in Amazon Prime's Electric Dreams — is not new to genre-inspired albums. Her early work included stories about an android from the future, and she has also noted that recent Marvel juggernaut Black Panther was one of the inspirations while working on her album.
"So at the same time as you have Black Panther being filmed, I'm making this album, and we're just kind of inspiring each other," Monae recently told MTV. "From Daniel [Kaluuya] to Lupita [Nyong'o] to Chadwick [Boseman], everybody coming over, giving me such a positive response. It made me feel like, 'I'm such a fan of you guys, I'm so excited for Black Panther.'"
Seeing these diverse and talented voices inspiring each other to create more genre-inspired art is an exciting look at the future of sci-fi.
