The standalone Aquaman movie from James Wan has already garnered plenty of hype for its unique spin on the fishy superhero and the overall tone of the DCEU. There’s just been so much footage that it’s hard not to be excited for the underwater, Black Manta-battling, supernatural fantasy wonderland. But ahead of its release later this year, its star revealed that he’s already got big plans for what comes next.
In this month’s TotalFilm, Jason Momoa explained that the film sets up plenty of storylines that could feed into a sequel — and he’s already pitched his ideas to the WB bigwigs.
But first, Wan described the groundwork that the film lays, saying that “There’s definitely stories, even within the world we’ve created, that you can actually see other storylines [spinning off from] as well. There’s the Aquaman story, but then there’s the stories of the seven different kingdoms as well. I think those would be very fun to explore.”
These seven, including the Atlanteans and the Fisherman people, factor into the film’s main plotline as Aquaman’s brother attempts to unite them against the land-dwellers. How they fell and where they go after the film could provide a rich vein for Wan’s storytelling.
Or Momoa’s, since he’s already got plans. “I definitely have an opinion,” the star said. “Even when we were shooting Aquaman, I have the opening of Aquaman 2 ready. I went in and pitched it to [producer Peter] Safran, and I pitched it to [Warner Bros. chairman] Toby Emmerich. They loved it. It’s awesome...But yeah, I have plans for Aquaman 2.”
How exactly those plans relate to Wan’s kingdoms is unclear, though the two could’ve bounced ideas off of each other during the production. That the decision-makers at WB enjoyed Momoa’s pitch is one thing, but the fate of a sequel will depend almost entirely on the success of its box office performance. Momoa and his big plans will have to wait and see when Aquaman splashes into theaters on Dec. 14.
