Universal's shared monsterverse is taking form as more and more hints are teased during clips and trailers for Universal's The Mummy, some showing what appears to be Dracula's skull and a fin from the Creature From the Black Lagoon in Dr. Jekyll's secret Prodigium facility.
One chap that's been left out is Frankenstein's abomination, but that slot in the creature parade is destined to be filled with news of Javier Bardem circling the sparking electrodes of Mary Shelley's original living corpse.
The Academy Award-winning actor is about to set sail in Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales this week as the vengeful buccaneer ghost Captain Armando Salazar, and now he's aiming his sights on inhabiting the yellowed skin of Frankenstein's monster for Universal. We first heard rumors of Bardem's possible involvement last year, but now in a chat with Cinemablend it seems he's confirmed his pending attachment.
“Yeah, well, there are talks,” he told the site. “And I would love to be part of it. Because it’s an iconic… speaking of an iconic character! I have the size of the head. [Laughs] That’s for sure. They’re not going to waste a lot of money in makeup, that’s for sure.”
Whether or not Bardem will step into the creature's big shoes for an initial appearance in another of the Universal monster mashes before his own solo film is unknown. In addition to next month's The Mummy, the historic studio has already announced plans for The Invisible Man with Johnny Depp, The Bride of Frankenstein, potentially starring Angelina Jolie, The Creature From the Black Lagoon, The Wolfman, perhaps with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, and a Van Helsing feature.
Do you think Bardem will bring life to the wretched electro-biological experiment and still look good roaring from a burning windmill?
