After swearing off being tortured for eight hours in the makeup chair putting on the blue body paint and Mystique's leather superhero outfit, it looks like Jennifer Lawrence has had a change of heart.
Back in March of last year, the Oscar-winning actress told MTV news that X-Men: Apocalypse was her “last one, sadly.” She was pretty adamant about it. However, in a recent interview with Empire Online, Lawrence said that she’d actually love to come back for another X-movie, and she explains why.
“I am dying to come back. I love these movies, I love being in them. I love ensemble movies because it’s not on anyone’s shoulders.”
Coming off the highly popular Hunger Games movie series, Lawrence certainly knows a thing or two about ensemble movies, even though, as Katniss Everdeen, she was the film’s main star. As for the X-Men films, Apocalypse will mark the third time the actress will play shape-shifting mutant Mystique in director Bryan Singer’s latest X-Men trilogy. Her first appearance was in 2011’s X-Men: First Class before she reprised the role for X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2014.
Even if she now says she’d love to come back (everyone has a right to change their mind, after all), that doesn’t mean it’s gonna happen, and I say that for a few reasons. First, Bryan Singer said Apocalypse was the natural ending to the prequel trilogy. It will also be his last X-Men film (at least for now), since the director is about to dive head first into a new big-screen adaptation of Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea for a planned 2017 release.
Second, there’s also the small fact that most of the core cast members’ contracts end with X-Men: Apocalypse, and that includes major hitters James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Nicholas Hoult. But, of course, contracts can get renegotiated all. the. time.
Last but not least, 20th Century Fox are probably super-busy concentrating their efforts on their upcoming X-Men Universe solo movies — Deadpool's sequel, a third Wolverine film and Gambit — and the much-talked-about X-Force and The New Mutants could also be in the pipeline. Still, Jennifer Lawrence could come back as Mystique to lend a hand to these other mutants, couldn't she?
