In last season's finale of CBS' The Ghost Whisperer, Melinda Gordon (Jennifer Love Hewitt) was expecting a baby, and Hewitt promises that viewers will meet the child when the show returns in the fall for its fifth season. (Spoilers ahead!)
In fact, the show will actually jump ahead five years for the season premiere, and viewers will meet Melinda's son as a toddler.
"Yes, you shall," Hewitt said in an exclusive interview on Tuesday in Pasadena, Calif., during the Television Critics Association summer press tour. "In the first episode, in the premiere."
Whisperings with Carl the watcher ghost led Melinda to have some concerns about her baby. Hewitt could neither confirm nor deny which of them, if any, would prove true. "We don't know yet," she teased.
One thing that will not change is Melinda's relationship with Jim (David Conrad, actually in the body of Sam, but we still see good old Jim). They remarried at the end of last year, but that was just a supernatural technicality.
"They've been married since the pilot," Hewitt said. "They had a wedding, but it was really just them getting married again in a different form, so it doesn't really change that much."
With the other ghost-whispering series, Medium, moving to CBS from NBC and joining Ghost Whisperer on Friday nights, the television media have been buzzing about a possible crossover. Both CBS executive Nina Tassler and Medium producer Glenn Gordon Caron said they were open to a crossover.
For her part, Hewitt said she thought it was all just wishful speculation.
"I haven't heard anything about that," Hewitt said. "In fact, I heard they were going to keep our shows separate, so I'm not so sure how true that is, but I would be fine with it. That would be fine, sure."
Ghost Whisperer returns Sept. 25 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.
