Though we’ve already caught up with most of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in Phase 2 of Marvel’s cinematic universe, Hawkeye has been noticeably absent — but all that’s about to change.
With a mystery announcement teased for Thursday, Marvel has been rolling out major character posters over the past two weeks for the tentpole sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron. The latest? Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye, who appears to be in the same wooded, winter setting we’ve already glimpsed him wandering through in the trailers. But, not to fall outside the established theme, we do see an Ultron robot or six lingering in the background.
There’s been a lot of positive buzz surrounding Hawkeye’s involvement in the Avengers sequel, and we’re really hoping they finally do Clint Barton justice. He’s the only main cast member not to appear in Phase 2 up to this point (even Bruce Banner got that post-credit stinger in Iron Man 3), and the character was tragically underutilized in The Avengers, spending most of the runtime as a brainwashed henchman.
Though a Hawkeye-centric spinoff doesn’t appear on Marvel’s current release slate (which just got even more crowded thanks to Spider-Man), it’s worth noting that Renner told The Daily Beast this past fall that he is signed on for a standalone film — just “in case they want to do a Hawkeye spinoff.”
Check out the U.K. version of Hawkeye’s poster below and let us know what you want to see from Marvel’s ace archer in the sequel:
