Just who is the fabulously talented Jessica Chastain playing in her first superhero movie, X-Men: Dark Phoenix?
When the news first broke that she was going to appear in the film, speculation ran rampant that she was cast as Lilandra Neramani, the Empress of the alien Shi'ar Empire. But despite that being a reasonable assumption to make, the actress herself seemed to deny that in a post on her Instagram page:
That's a screengrab, by the way; the actual post was later deleted. Chastain mentioned in a separate post that today was her first full day of filming on Dark Phoenix, but the social-media-savvy actress gave no further hints about her role.
Either way, nabbing Chastain was a coup for director Simon Kinberg, since Chastain has never done a comics-based movie before. Known for roles in pictures like Zero Dark Thirty, Crimson Peak, The Martian, The Tree of Life, Interstellar, and A Most Violent Year, the two-time Academy Award nominee adds even more A-list talent to a film already featuring actors like Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence.
But now, unless she's deliberately being deceptive or was just trolling the fans, we have to start thinking all over again about who she's playing. Is it possible that she'll actually play a distinct, separate Phoenix against Sophie Turner's Jean Grey? Perhaps an older version of Jean herself? Or does Simon Kinberg have something else afoot? We're not sure how closely this movie will adhere to the classic story from the comics, so anything is possible.
Do you think Chastain is really playing Lilandra after all? If not, then who is she playing?
X-Men: Dark Phoenix is out in theaters Nov. 2, 2018.
