The dreamlike fantasy film The Dark Crystal had legions of loyal fans cheering this week when word of Boom! Studios' new comic book sequel series, The Power of the Dark Crystal, was announced.
Directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz, The Dark Crystal was an ambitious undertaking released in 1982, with its weird sophisticated puppetry, detailed miniatures, lavish costumes and elaborate sets. Sequel rumors were juggled around over the years, most recently in 2005, but never materialized.
Now Boom! Studios' Archaia imprint is resurrecting the storied property as a new 12-issue comic series adapted from an unproduced screenplay by David Odell, Annette Odell and Craig Pearce. Set for a 2017 launch to coincide with the 35th anniversary of The Dark Crystal, the sequel picks up years after the events of the original film and will feature the creative team of writer Simon Spurrier (X-Force, Six-Gun Gorilla) and artists Kelly & Nichole Matthews (Toil and Trouble).
Check out the official solicitation synopsis:
In celebration of the 35th anniversary of Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal, return to the world of Thra in an official sequel to the beloved fantasy film.Discover an all-new race of creatures called Firelings that live in a realm near the planet’s core, based on official character designs by Brian Froud. Years have passed since the events of the original film, and though Jen and Kira have ruled Thra as King and Queen, bringing Gelfling back to the land, they have become distracted by power and can no longer feel or see the needs of the world the way they once did. Thurma is a young Fireling tasked with stealing a shard of the Dark Crystal to restore power to her realm. Along the way she’ll befriend the young Gelfling Kensho, bring back the Skeksis and Mystics, and embark on one incredible adventure.
And here's what The Jim Henson Company's CEO, Lisa Henson, had to say about this intriguing project:
“The creativity that went into writing and designing the feature film was such that we wanted our fans to be able to see and enjoy it now through this comic book series. We are very proud of the story that the screenwriters David Odell, Annette Odell, and Craig Pearce wrote. Our partners at Archaia and BOOM! Studios are the only people we could trust to expand and illustrate the story, and we are thrilled that it will soon see the light of day!"
