Starz has released the first intriguing trailer for the upcoming series Counterpart, a spy thriller with a sci-fi twist starring the new Commissioner Gordon himself in a dual role, Oscar-winner J.K. Simmons (Justice League).

Created by Justin Marks (The Jungle Book), the 10-episode TV show (two seasons were ordered back in 2015) will take us inside the wonderful world of "espionage, intrigue and government conspiracies" that are, yes, pretty standard for a spy thriller. However the sci-fi twist mentioned earlier is that 30 years ago, a Cold War experiment went wrong and created a passage to a parallel world. Think Fringe meets John Le Carré, with a double dose of Simmons. What’s not to like?

Counterpart also stars Olivia Williams (Manhattan), Harry Lloyd (Game of Thrones), Nicholas Pinnock (Captain America: The First Avenger), Nazanin Boniadi (Homeland), Sara Serraiocco (Worldly Girl), Ulrich Thomsen (Banshee), and Kenneth Choi (Spider-Man: Homecoming). Directing the first episode is Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game).

Check out the official series synopsis, as per the Starz press release:

“Counterpart” is about a mysterious world hidden beneath the surface of our everyday existence. Howard Silk (J.K. Simmons) is a lowly cog in the bureaucratic machinery of a Berlin-based United Nations spy agency. When Howard discovers that his organization safeguards the secret of a crossing into a parallel dimension, he is thrust into a shadow world of intrigue, danger, and double cross… where the only man he can trust is his near-identical counterpart from this parallel world. The show explores themes of identity, fate and lost love, posing the eternal question, “what if our lives could have been different?”

Counterpart will premiere Jan. 21, 2018 on Starz. Will you be tuning in when the show debuts early next year?
