John Barrowman has been a staple of the Arrow-verse for five years, and has seen his presence extend out to a memorable role in Legends of Tomorrow, too. But it’s apparently coming to an end.

Spoilers ahead for the Season 5 finale of Arrow!

As fans are well aware, the fifth season of Arrow ended on the biggest of cliffhangers, with pretty much the entire cast trapped on Lian Yu as the island exploded. But, before that explosion, Barrowman’s Malcolm Merlyn jumped on a landmine to protect his daughter, and seemingly exploded off-screen. Now, this is a guy who has “died” more than a few times on this show (not to mention his nickname is literally The Magician), so you’d be forgiven for thinking this was just another fake-out.

Well, apparently this time it was for real. Barrowman has posted a video to fans thanking them for their support and bidding farewell to the series (and the DC universe in general). If this really is goodbye, it’s a shame to see Merlyn go. Yes, his character has outlived pretty much any reasonable reason for sticking around, but he still has a boatload of chemistry with star Stephen Amell — and it’s dynamite anytime they’re together on screen.

If that final moment really was Malcolm’s farewell, he at least went out on top. Merlyn died a hero protecting his daughter — trying his best to be the man he always wanted to be.
