This new The Thing premium vinyl release from Waxwork Records will be the second for my new collection of classic soundtracks on wax after the announcement of I Am Shark's 4-cover, collector's edition Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Ennio Morricone's unnerving, minimalist score for John Carpenter's The Thing is a true classic, blending an ominous range of disturbing orchestral pieces with thumping electronic passages to create a claustrophobic aural setting perfectly in tune with the film's Antarctic research base and shape-shifting alien visitor.

While John Carpenter and Alan Howarth took care of the music duties on most of the director's movies, this was one of the rare occasions he brought in an outside composer. Morricone is a world-renowned musician who created the scores to the Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns and numerous blockbuster films over the past six decades, including the soundtrack for Quentin Tarrantino's The Hateful Eight, for which Morricone was awarded the Oscar for Best Score at last year's Academy Awards. Incidentally, Morricone actually used tracks from The Thing's soundtrack in The Hateful Eight for an interesting bit of creative synchronicity.

Waxwork's prestige-format soundtrack re-issue of the sci-fi horror masterpiece has been painstakingly reproduced, working for nearly two years "to ensure that such a highly anticipated and sought-after vinyl soundtrack re-issue would meet and exceed expectations of the biggest fan."

The Thing premium vinyl edition is available for pre-order HERE but I'd hustle if you plan on snagging one. They're going faster than a snowman on the equator in the middle of summer!
