Walt Disney Pictures released two TV spots for its upcoming John Carter of Mars in which we see our hero perform superhuman feats of physical prowess. And this makes our fannish hearts squeal in delight, because it looks as if the Mouse is getting the book right.
The book that John Carter is based on, A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs and published in 1917, supposes that gravity is lower on Mars than it is on Earth. Burroughs then extrapolates that humans on Mars would be able to leap extremely high, free from the confines of Earth's gravity.
In these two TV spots, Carter evades and counteracts using his newfound abilities. We also meet the princess of Mars and see the air-poor wasteland of the Red Planet, known to the locals as Barsoom.
John Carter looks like it could be a whole lot of fun. We'll be eagerly awaiting its release date on March 9, 2012.
