His casting in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald created a stir of controversy when it was first announced last year — but Johnny Depp isn't leaving the franchise anytime soon.

In an interview with Collider, Depp confirmed that he will reprise his role as Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 3. "The possibilities in that world are wide open, so you can really try anything," he said, talking about playing the character. "So it was a gas and I look forward to the next installment, which I think we start the middle of next year."

Last year, creator J.K. Rowling came to the defense of casting Depp in the role, after many voiced their disapproval following domestic abuse claims by his ex-wife Amber Heard, which the actor has vehemently denied. Rowling posted a response on her personal website defending the decision.

Elsewhere in the Collider interview, Depp notes the offer of the role "came out of nowhere" after someone had told him that Rowling wanted to talk to him. Depp claims upon their first meeting, Rowling told him: "I can't wait to see what you do with the character."

Earlier this year at San Diego Comic-Con, Depp surprised fans by turning up to the movie's event fully dressed up as Grindelwald.

The Crimes of Grindelwald is set for release on Nov. 16, 2018. Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, and Dan Fogler return as Jude Law joins the cast as a young Dumbledore. Fantastic Beasts 3 has a tentative release date of November 2020.
