Johnny Depp's got a plan to transcend humanity's intelligence, but what will happen to humanity if he does?
That seems to be the question at the heart of Transcendence, the directorial debut of Oscar-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister, whose work you know from Inception, the Dark Knight Trilogy and nearly every other film Christopher Nolan's made. Nolan also serves as executive producer on the film, which stars Depp as an ambitious scientist who believes that he can create a sentient machine that will quickly surpass all human intelligence ever, while those who fear such an advancement make him a target.
The concept alone is promising, but there's also plenty of talent on board here. Jack Paglen's script was on last year's "Black List" of the best then-unproduced screenplays in Hollywood (often a fertile ground for cool new flicks), and the film's cast also includes Rebecca Hall, Morgan Freeman, Kate Mara, Paul Bettany and Cillian Murphy.
Sadly, the teaser is little more than a speech made by Depp and a CGI presentation of brain cells interacting with binary code. Still, by the time you hit the final image, you've got plenty to think about.
Check out the teaser above.Transcendence arrives in theaters on April 18, 2014. What do you think? Will you add it to your must-see list?
