Johnny Depp's sci-fi thriller is about the nature of consciousness and the ethics of prolonging that consciousness beyond the death of the body. R.I.F.T. is the vehicle that gets us to those big questions.

Presuming that Transcendence doesn't wind up being a mindless action film, it's got real potential to delve into some of the big quandaries over the nature of mortality and the ills of trying to stop the proverbial clock on death.

But it's also about the dangers of technology and so, predictably, there's this group in the film called R.I.F.T. (Revolutionary Independence From Technology) that is none too pleased that Johnny Depp's character is making such huge (and questionable) strides in transferring consciousness to a digital space. And those luddites are the subject of two new viral ads promoting Transcendence.

Well, they seem kind of silly and reactionary so far. Which, in fairness, makes them like a lot of fringe groups.

Meanwhile, there's a new featurette for the film that also focuses on the dangers that Depp's character's achievement represents.

As ever, Transcendence seems like it has a lot of potential so long as it can get out from under the heavy message of "technology bad" that it seems like it's pushing really, really hard.
