Send in the clowns! Joker, the origin story of Batman’s greatest villain coming from director Todd Phillips, hasn’t been stingy with pictures of the creepy buffoons. We got to see star Joaquin Phoenix in full Joker makeup, which actually looked good enough to generate some confidence in this oddball project. Now we get to see Phoenix in a different kind of clown makeup.

Phillips posted a photo on Instagram of his star all decked out in more traditional clown garb — less supervillain and more “still super creepy” — leading up to the character’s full-blown transformation into an antagonist.

Check it out:

Okay, okay, before you ask things like “Aren’t there a ton of clowns running around this set? A clown carload of clowns?”, we checked this out.

Phoenix is playing Arthur, a comedian/clown who has one no-good, very bad day that pushes him over the edge. As you can see in some of the pictures in the tweet below, Arthur is wearing the same outfit and makeup (look at the eye diamonds, the jacket pattern, the place where a red nose used to be) and falling apart in a phone booth.

We just got an official before-and-after from Joker’s director. Clown vs. Clown Prince. That’s pretty cool. But what in the world could be said in that phone call? Something that leads to some train terror, if leaks are to be believed. And there seems to be no end to the amount of leaks coming from that set.

Hopefully some secrets still remain by the time the film hits theaters on Oct. 4 of next year.
