Okay, what exactly is Joaquin Phoenix’s standalone Joker movie? The Todd Phillips-helmed origin story for Batman’s arch-nemesis is adding actors with wide-ranging experience with superheroes like Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, and Frances Conroy -- and now it’s reaching out into stranger corners of the entertainment industry to flesh out its varied cast.
According to Variety, Glow actor, comedian, and podcast empresario Marc Maron is in talks to join the film as an agent that helps book the Joker onto De Niro’s talk show -- setting events in motion for the Clown Prince of Crime to go mad and embrace his inner villain.
We know about as much about Maron’s character as we do about that of Beetz, who is playing a single mom wrapped up with Phoenix’s character, or Conroy, who's playing the Joker’s mom Penny. All are interestingly incidental and centered on what would seem to be a non-villainous character, suggesting that his transformation and descent into madness is a later aspect of the film.
If all this sounds crazy and totally unlike any other superhero movie, you’re right. This is DCEU adjacent and will not interrupt the canon that Jared Leto’s Joker exists inside, but will seemingly be a totally oddball take on a character whose power often stems from his mysterious, chaotic, and unreliably-explained origins.
The Warner Bros. film is set to be released on Oct. 4, 2019.
