Joseph Fiennes (Camelot, American Horror Story) has joined the cast of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, where he will star alongside Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men).

The 10-episode TV series based on Margaret Atwood’s award-winning 1985 dystopian novel will see Fiennes tackle the pivotal role of Commander Fred Waterford, the founding father of Gilead, a powerful high-ranking official who is head of the household where Offred (played by Elisabeth Moss) is a handmaid. The character was played by Robert Duvall in the 1990 movie, which also starred Faye Dunaway, the late Natasha Richardson (as Offred), Aidan Quinn and Elizabeth McGovern.

Here’s the gist of the story as per Deadline:

The series tells the story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly part of the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalism that treats women as property of the state. As one of the few remaining fertile women, Offred (Moss) is a Handmaid in the Commander’s household, one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate a devastated world. In this terrifying society where one wrong word could end her life, Offred navigates between Commanders, their cruel Wives, domestic Marthas, and her fellow Handmaids – where anyone could be a spy for Gilead – all with one goal: to survive and find the daughter that was taken from her.

Slated to begin filming in Toronto in the fall for a 2017 premiere date, The Handmaid’s Tale also stars Max Minghella (The Mindy Project, The Internship), Samira Wiley (Orange is the New Black), Ann Dowd (The Leftovers) and Madeline Brewer (Hemlock Grove).

The series is created by Bruce Miller (The 100) who will also executive-produce alongside Daniel Wilson (who produced the 1990 movie), Fran Sears (The Sophisticated Gents) and Warren Littlefield (Fargo). Margaret Atwood will serve as a consulting producer. Reed Morano (Looking, Vinyl) has been tapped to helm the first three episodes.

What do you think of Joseph Fiennes for the role of Commander Fred Waterford in Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale?
