Casting is now well underway on Fox's New Mutants film, which director Josh Boone and company will shoot later this year for a release next spring. Anya Taylor-Joy and Maisie Williams have already joined as Magik and Wolfsbane, respectively, and Rosario Dawson could board the flick to play Cecilia Reyes. Now another young star is on the way, and he'll be playing an original member of the team.

Variety reports that Charlie Heaton, best known for his role as Jonathan Byers on the Netflix hit Stranger Things, is in talks to join the film as Sam Guthrie, aka Cannonball.

First introduced in Marvel Graphic Novel #4 back in 1982, Cannonball is a member of a large family from rural Kentucky who is recruited by the Hellfire Club as a young man. Ultimately, his strong sense of right and wrong wins out, and rather than kill the New Mutants, he joins them. He's called "Cannonball" because he can manifest intense thermal energy from his body that allows him to fly at jet-like speeds while surrounded by a virtually indestructible "blast field." His extremely flashy and strong powers are contrasted with his humility, politeness and devotion to the values he was raised with.

As Jonathan Byers, Heaton demonstrated that he can play many of those qualities already. He can do humble, and polite, and he can be the young man who has to step up and care for his family in the absence of a father (something Sam has to do as part of his origin story). Put a good Southern accent on him, and Heaton feels like he'd be a great addition to the team.

New Mutants hits theaters April 13, 2018. What do you think? Is Heaton a good choice for Cannonbal? And who should play his pal and teammate, Sunspot?
