This month, Josh Brolin is going for the one-two punch of comic book movies with Avengers: Infinity War in theaters and the film most likely to unseat it from the top of the box office: Deadpool 2, which opens Friday. While appearing on The Tonight Show earlier this week, Brolin shared a clip of himself as Cable opposite Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool. But after Brolin wowed audiences as Thanos in Infinity War, Jimmy Fallon couldn’t resist bringing up his role as the Mad Titan of the MCU.
Fallon asked Brolin how he came up with the voice of Thanos. And rather than providing a straight answer, Brolin simply offered a few silly alternative voices for one of Thanos’ signature lines from the film.
Although Brolin deflected from answering how he and Marvel settled on Thanos’ voice, that short clip illustrated the importance of finding the right persona for Thanos. Brolin needed to be able to convey Thanos’ sense of menace while also allowing viewers to witness some of his more emotional aspects. He’s not simply an unfeeling villain who exists just to be the bad guy. This incarnation of Thanos has more nuance than many expected, including Brolin himself.
During an interview with Good Morning America from 2017, Brolin hinted that his take on Thanos would have hidden depths. And no one was more surprised than Brolin himself.
“He's a smart character,” said Brolin. “In all truth, I had no idea when I did the teaser [in Avengers: Age of Ultron]. Now, being actually involved... it's way more interactive than I thought... It's a lot deeper than I thought, [and] more emotional.”
As promised in the end credits of Infinity War, Thanos will return in Avengers 4 on May 3, 2019.
