Josh Hutcherson (Peeta Mellark on all those Hunger Games films) will be playing the lead in Hulu’s new sci-fi half-hour comedy pilot called Future Man. He’ll also act as producer via his production company, Turkeyfoot.

The pilot is the brainchild of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. The dynamic duo also has another (highly anticipated, I must say) genre series coming up with AMC’s Preacher, starring Dominic Cooper (Agent Carter) in the title role.

Future Man will be written by Kyle Hunter and Ariel Shaffir (longtime collaborators of Rogen and Goldberg), and the story will center on Josh Futterman (Hutcherson), who’s a simple janitor by day but an awesome world-ranking gamer by night. Futterman (Future Man, gettit?) is then tasked with preventing mankind’s extinction after mysterious visitors from the future pop up and tell him he’s the key to defeating an impending super-race invasion.

It’s an interesting concept that somewhat reminds me of The Last Starfighter (1984) because both characters are skilled video-game players enlisted to protect mankind/the galaxy from an imminent super-race/alien invasion, but I like they’re going down the comedy route a la The Last Man on Earth here. Could be a lot of fun.

With totally-out-there comedies being Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s strong suit, Hulu may have another genre winner on their hands (see: 11.22.63). But first, guess we’ll have to press pause on our video-game controllers and see if the pilot makes it to full series.
