Josh Trank was a buzzy director coming off his indie sci-fi hit Chronicle, which is how he landed the epic train wreck Fantastic Four. His next project was rumored to be a Star Wars spinoff focused on Boba Fett, and it was this close to happening.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Disney was keen to announce two new Star Wars projects at Star Wars Celebration in spring of 2015, but one of them got the ax just days before the event. The studio announced Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story at the event, though when the studio parted ways with Trank (likely due to reports of total chaos surrounding the Fantastic Four production), Lucasfilm switched course and focused solely on Rogue One.

But the new report reveals the studio was imminently close to announcing another new Star Wars spinoff at the event, which would’ve focused on Boba Fett. When Trank made his abrupt exit, Disney “backburnered” the project. Apparently, though, the Boba Fett film was so close to being announced that Disney literally had a concept reel that was ready to show at Star Wars Celebration. If things had gone a little bit differently, it was days away from being on the calendar.

With Rogue One just a few weeks from release now, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said the company plans to have a major planning session in January, once they can get a feel for how well the first spinoff film has been received. It’s currently tracking for a solid debut, but there’s good, and there’s Force Awakens-good. Disney wants to figure out exactly where the difference lies, before mapping out a boatload of spinoffs and prequels.

What do you think? Do you wish Disney would’ve pushed this one forward and just found another director?
