Sarah Michelle Gellar might have put the kibosh on there ever being a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reunion show, but that doesn't mean the character is dead and buried. In fact, in the comic world she’s been thriving, so much so that creator Joss Whedon is returning to continue her legacy in the 12th season of the graphic novels.

CBR.com reports that Whedon will be co-writing Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 12: The Reckoning alongside longtime Buffy collaborator Christos Gage, with Georges Jeanty returning to illustrate the action. And this is a pretty big deal when you consider it’s the first time Whedon has been back writing in the Buffyverse since Buffy: Season Nine in 2011.

You may recall that Dark Horse Comics sent Buffy back to high school back in 2015 for the graphic novel Buffy: The High School Years, which was executive-produced by Whedon, which saw the Scooby Gang fighting off forces of evil once again. A lot has happened since then, including the gang saving the world from more impending doom (oh, and there’s been a Rupert Giles spin-off). But what’s more exciting is what’s to come in the next adventure.

The Reckoning will take place after Buffy and Co. have saved everyone from the supernatural disaster that wreaked havoc on the citizens of San Francisco. Yup, it appears there's absolutely no rest for the slayer, and the synopsis is packed with some tantalizing details.

First off, there’s a scary-sounding time loop that Buffy gets stuck in, which risks ending all slayers for good. There’s also said to be some weird alternative futures being explored, with Xander and Dawn fighting off vampires from different time periods. Speaking of the future, time-travelling Slayer Fray is also set to make an appearance.

There’s even the return of Faith and Angel to get excited about, though it’s not clear yet whose side they’ll be on in the age-old battle of Scoobies vs. demons. We also couldn't help but notice the illustration of Buffy holding a newborn baby ... is she going to be hearing the pitter-patter of tiny feet by becoming a mom?! We can't wait to find out.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 12: The Reckoning #1 will be available from June 20. Are you excited for the next chapter? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
