Joss Whedon reveals why he cut the Wasp from the Avengers movie

If there are two original Avengers characters who most fans feel have been unfairly left out of the upcoming summer EPIC movie (four days left and counting), they're Ant-Man and the Wasp. After all, the couple were founding members of the Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

Speaking to the NY Daily News, The Avengers director and king of all geekdom Joss Whedon, who came on board as the writer and director of the mighty superhero film right in the third year of its five-year process, recalled that a certain super lady from the Avengers comics named Janet van Dyne, aka the Wasp, was originally included in the early drafts of the movie (Whedon mentioned how he was a fan of the Wasp here and how he wanted put her in the movie).

This is the interesting bit:

Whedon will be the first to admit it almost didn't work. There was a version of the script, back when Johansson wasn't involved, that featured a female superhero named the Wasp. Whedon had to scrap that script, and was making changes to his final version even as the effects people were starting work on the 40-minute battle that closes the movie. "Trying to figure out the way you want to introduce all those characters, that was stuff we were still tweaking in the edit," says Whedon.

So the Wasp was supposed to be in the film instead of Scarlett Johansson's amazing ass-kicking Black Widow? Interesting ...

Comic Book Movie reports that last year Whedon had made a doubtful comment on his initial plan to include van Dyne, saying, "I tried to write her in, but I could not make it work."

There's still an undisclosed Marvel movie for 2014 alongside Captain America 2, and with an Ant-Man solo movie still in the works from writer-director Edgar Wright, there's still hope we'll see the character in the next Avengers outing. Fingers crossed, y'all.

What do you guys think? Should the Wasp have been in the Avengers movie now? Did Joss Whedon make the right decision?
