Judge Dredd is going to be adapted as a TV series. Hey, it's not a film sequel, but we'll take it.
According to Entertainment Weekly, IM Global Television and British games developer and publisher Rebellion have joined forces to create a live-action TV series titled Judge Dredd: Mega-City One, with IM Global president Mark Stern (Battlestar Galactica, Helix, Defiance) attached to executive-produce alongside CEO Stuart Ford and Rebellion’s Jason and Chris Kingsley.
Fun Fact: The Kingsley brothers, as well as Stuart Ford, were executive producers on the 2012 Dredd film starring Karl Urban with a script by Alex Garland (Ex-Machina). Which begs the question: Will they invite Karl Urban to reprise the role of Dredd for the live-action series? The Star Trek actor was pretty great in the role, and he’s been clamoring for another shot at the character since the first movie came out. And will the series tie in in any way to the movie? The odds aren't great (despite the fan love, the movie was a bomb), but it certainly has us curious.
Here’s a description of Judge Dredd: Mega-City One:
The show is set in a future where the East Coast of the U.S. has become a crowded and crime-ridden megalopolis. It will be an ensemble drama about a team of Judges — futuristic cops invested with the power to be judge, jury, and executioner — as they deal with the challenges the future-shocked 22nd century throws at them.
Said Jason and Chris Kingsley: “We’re very excited to be beginning the journey to get more of Judge Dredd’s Mega-City One on the television screen. Thanks to the legions of fans who have kept up pressure on social media, and a lot of background work and enthusiasm, we aim to make a big budget production that will satisfy both our vast comics audience and the even greater general screen-watching public.”
Have a look at the show’s one-sheet, and chime in with your thoughts about a live-action Judge Dredd TV series. Would you like to see Karl Urban return to the role? If not, who do you think should wear the badge and iconic helmet?
