Today, July 28, This Day in Twilight Zone History and The Twilight Zone Encyclopedia wish a happy 87th birthday to actor Darryl Hickman, who was born on this day in 1931.

Hickman, brother of Dwayne Hickman of Dobie Gillis fame, portrayed U.S. Navy Ensign Janoski, a Pearl Harbor sailor who has a strange encounter with a man from the future (William Bendix) in Rod Serling's powerful episode of Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse, "The Time Element."

Actor Darryl Hickman's career dates back to his childhood. He played a smart ensign in "The Time Element."

Janoski and his bride (Carolyn Kearney) have no idea what to make of a man who inexplicably predicts a Japanese attack on the base, scheduled for tomorrow: December 7, 1941. As I've mentioned before, this was the unofficial pilot that helped sell CBS on the Serling series.

Unlike his brother who was known for his TV work, Darryl had a big career in features, appearing in The Prisoner of Zenda (1937), The Grapes of Wrath (1940), Destination Gobi (1953, as Wilbur "Coney" Cohen), The Tingler (1959), and Network (1976).

So let's raise a tropical cocktail with one of those little umbrellas to Janoski, who got married at Pearl Harbor and proceeded to take his bride on a honeymoon in The Twilight Zone.
