Today, July 29th, This Day in Twilight Zone History and The Twilight Zone Encyclopedia celebrate the birth of Lloyd Bochner, born on this day in 1924.
Bochner portrayed Michael Chambers, a crack cryptologist who attempts to decipher a book left behind at the UN by a giant alien (Richard Kiel) in "To Serve Man." The aliens are called Kanamits, and they've arrived on Earth with what they call peaceful intentions. However, unlike Klaatu in The Day the Earth Stood Still, these aliens are cooking up something...
Bochner (1924-2005), a Toronto native, arrived in Los Angeles to co-star opposite future TZ player Rod Taylor in the Hong Kong series (1960-1961). He was later a popular small screen villain on dozens of TV series and voiced Mayor Hamilton Hill on Batman: the Animated Series (1992-1994). His son, Hart Bochner, became a popular leading man in the 1980s (Breaking Away, Die Hard).
So let's raise a goblet of Romulan wine to Michael Chambers and the strange journey he takes to the table of the Kanamits – another odd detour into The Twilight Zone.
And a quick note to all the wonderful fans who've embraced this blog: it will end its run on Tuesday, July 31. I will have completed 365 chapters – a full year. You can find them on Facebook if you type in "The Twilight Zone Encyclopedia." Cheers!
