July 31 in Sci-Fi History: Lurch and J.K. Rowling

Two different birthdays, two very awesome sci-fi heroes.

Ted Cassidy was born on this day in 1932. You know him as Lurch. (TV Lurch.)

Cassidy was 6'9" and a character actor on Star Trek and I Dream of Jeannie before landing his iconic role on The Addams Family. A lot of people don't know this, but he also played the character of Thing for a while.

Because it was the '60s, he was also involved in some people trying to start a dance craze. Do the Lurch, gang.

Also, J.K. Rowling was born on this day in 1965.

You know some of the myth. She was exceptionally poor and writing in a coffee shop and then suddenly, like magic, went on to create some of the most interesting speculative fiction we've ever read.
