Today, July 5th, This Day in Twilight Zone History and The Twilight Zone Encyclopedia wish a happy birthday to actress Brooke Hayward, who was born on this day in 1937.

Brooke portrayed vain Paula Harper, the daughter of Emily (Virginia Gregg) and Wilfred Harper (Milton Selzer) in "The Masks." Paula and her family have come to New Orleans to wait out the death of their patriarch, Jason Foster (Robert Keith), who has a little chore for them to perform before they can inherit any of his considerable fortune.

Brooke Hayward comes from show business royalty. Her mother was actress Margaret Sullivan (The Shop Around the Corner) and her father was Broadway producer and agent Leland Hayward (South Pacific). Brooke had an extremely brief career in Hollywood; however, she is immortalized in this terrific episode directed by Ida Lupino.

In 1977, Hayward wrote the bestseller Haywire, which chronicled in candid fashion the trials and tribulations of her own family. She's also the ex-wife of fellow TZ veteran Dennis Hopper.

So let's hoist a Mint Julep to Brooke Hayward on her birthday and to the Harper family who got their just desserts on the show that always adds a kick after the main meal: The Twilight Zone.

And, to all of you attending Serling Fest in Binghamton this weekend, I will see you there. I am honored to be a guest amongst the superfans. Cheers!
