Today, June 14th, This Day in Twilight Zone History and The Twilight Zone Encyclopedia remember a gem of a character actress: Marjorie Bennett, who passed on this day in 1982.
The ubiquitous Bennett portrayed an old woman bystander in "The Chaser" (salary: $150); Mrs. Summers, a senior home resident in "Kick the Can" (salary: $150); and Mrs. Chamberlain, who runs the 19th century boarding house in "No Time Like the Past" (salary: $200).
After playing bathing beauties in the silent film era, Bennett (1896-1982) returned to Hollywood three decades later to play character roles in scores of films and television series. Kind of hard to picture Marjorie as a bathing beauty, given all her more mature work, but she was definitely a hottie in her day.
Bennett's feature credits extend from Abbott and Costello Meet the Killer (1949) to Have Rocket-Will Travel (with The Three Stooges) to Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? She was truly a salt of the earth performer and TZ was stocked with them.
So, on this the anniversary of her passing, let's salute a grande dame of American character actors, a credit to her profession, and another precious stone in that jewel box of television we call The Twilight Zone.
