Today, June 21st, This Day in Twilight Zone History and The Twilight Zone Encyclopedia celebrate the birthday of actress Mariette Hartley.

A Connecticut native with six Emmy nominations under her belt, Hartley co-starred opposite Robert Lansing in "The Long Morrow," playing space scientist Sandra Horn. Sandra makes the mistake of falling in love with an astronaut who's about to leave Earth for 40 years.

A prolific actress in both film and television, Hartley made her small screen debut as Laura Grayson on the Stoney Burke rodeo rider series starring Jack Lord. That same year, she made her feature debut opposite Randolph Scott and Joel McCrea in director Sam Peckinpah’s classic western Ride the High Country.

Over the years, Mariette has worked in every genre, and in 1969, she made memorable appearances on both Star Trek (as Mr. Spock's accidental love interest in "All Our Yesterdays") and as Gene Hackman’s wife in director John Sturges' Marooned (a movie reminiscent of the more recent Apollo 13). She won an Emmy in 1979 for her role in The Incredible Hulk.

Space scientist Sandra Horn (Mariette Hartley) and astronaut Douglas Stansfield (Robert Lansing) give new meaning to the word "starcrossed" in "The Long Morrow."

So let's wish a Happy Birthday to a terrific actress who may have been the most patient woman in the history of the show – a show where patience often went unrewarded, a twisted hallmark of The Twilight Zone.

I also want to do a major shout-out to my wife Elisa, who also celebrates her birthday today.
